1 in 110 babies in the United States are born with a congenital heart defect.
Congenital heart defects are conditions present at birth that can affect the way the heart works. They can cause lifelong disability or death. They are the most common type of birth defect, affecting nearly 40,000 births in the United States each year.
1 in 4 Pregnancies end in loss.
Approximately a million pregnancies yearly in the United States end in early pregnancy loss, stillbirth, or the death of a newborn child. About 1 in 4 pregnancies will end in early loss, before 20 weeks gestation, and 1 in 160 end after 20 weeks gestation.
CHDs are the most common cause of infant death due to birth defects. An approximate 100-200 deaths are due to unrecognized heart disease in newborns each year. (source:CHPHC)
